The Urgency of Voice Passwords replacing Typed one such as 123456
The Hack: It is quite common for security experts to complain that most of the security breaches that occur are primarily due to the usage of weak passwords not only by general users but in some instances even employees and personnel who administer critical Information Technology infrastructure. Also, for hackers who have long realized the frailty of the situation know exactly how to crack the encrypted passwords on a website’s server after hacking them.
Security companies are always coming out with various alternative methods of authentication for accessing online websites or services. And time and again these have not really taken off with the main stream as people are so glued on to the easy to use Username and Password option that one is too lazy to try something different. Yes, for curiosity people may start using fingerprint scanner on their mobile devices or their laptops or some may try out the latest iris recognition on the high end smartphones, others may just use two factor authentication such as OTP to conduct a financial transaction. Just in case to be secure. And yet these have not truly secured the end user as hackers have found ways to get around these solutions.
The Whack: Security solution providers have clearly forgotten the utility of voice password in securing authentication. While a person may have one face, two irises and ten fingers, the same person can have an infinite number of spoken words to be used as your password.
Also, privacy conscious people feel too risky sharing their fingerprints but would not mind the same with voice as they inherently use voice on the phone day in day out. Apps such as Siri on the iPhone have made us more comfortable talking to a machine. The best thing about voice password is that the end user can literally use any phone not just a high end smartphone with a near perfect iris or fingerprint scanner. User can use a 10 dollar feature phone to speak in their voice password or even their land line or car phone.
The added fact that voice passwords offer Multi-Platform and Multi-Channel authentication ensure that hackers have to make twice the effort than any other form of authentication to hack into a user’s account. Companies such as Nuance have developed near perfect voice authentication technology that even smaller companies such as SecureMyPass are leveraging as a third factor of authentication for mass deployment specially in a country such as India, where the Government has launched a financial inclusion drive by debit money directly into a person’s account be it in the village or slums in the city.
Most people in India now have a cellphone though not necessarily a smartphone or an Internet connection. SecureMyPass has developed a very promising app that can bridge the divide in offering affordable and very secure authentication for this purpose. Reason why it is utmost urgent we do away with manual passwords and replace them with voice passwords.
